About SFS:
The School for Field Studies (SFS) creates transformative study abroad experiences through field-based learning and research. Our educational programs explore the human and ecological dimensions of the complex environmental problems faced by our local partners, contributing to sustainable solutions in the places where we live and work.

Position  Summary:
Working closely with the Centre Director, Faculty and Student Affairs Manager to provide support in the areas of Academics, Programming and Operations. This includes program delivery, field assistance, logistics, program safety and risk management and student life.

Center for Rainforest Studies in Yungaburra, Australia

Reports to:
Center Director. Day to day supervision may be delegated to Faculty, Student Affairs Manager or Site Manager as appropriate.

Program Schedule:
This is a year-long contract position starting August 2018 and ending August 2019, which includes a Fall Semester, Spring Semester, and two Summer Sessions.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Academic: (60% time)
  • Assist faculty with coordinating and executing academic and research activities
  • Provide support in on and off-site field exercises
  • Mentor students in generic skills such as writing and presentation skills
Student Group Dynamics/Student Life: (30% time)
  • Assist in preparations for and carrying out orientation, group field trips, field exercises, camping trips, center projects and community outreach
  • Facilitate students performing their required tasks in support of the residential aspects of program (chores, food preparation, recycling efforts, center clean-ups, outreach projects)
  • Adhere to, actively model, and enforce all SFS and Center policies, procedures, and rules
Administrative/Logistical/Program Support: (10% time)
  • On a rotating basis, act as "staff of the day"
  • Assist with administrative or logistical tasks such as planning, running errands, record keeping, and routine maintenance of site and equipment as requested
  • As requested by the Center Director, assist with other logistical, group management, and administrative tasks
  • Help develop Center sustainability projects

Minimum Qualifications:
  • B.A./B.S. in subject(s) relevant to the Centre, preferably from a US institution
  • Experience in field research, preferably both biological and social
  • Accustomed to working long hours in remote environments with limited resources
  • Ease with living communally and using shared facilities
  • Ability to obtain required Australian work authorization
  • Unrestricted manual car license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience living, working, or studying internationally
  • First Aid qualification
 Other Expectations:
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and live on site at the field station with a small team of permanent staff, groups of US undergraduate students and visiting researchers or programs
  • Participate in the residential campus activities and community outreach
  • At all times, work to ensure good relations between the SFS and the local community
